I am going to talk with you all a bit this week about the whole Brexit business. Now, I am sure, like me, a lot of you have heard it going on all summer in bits and pieces, but it seems to be becoming serious now with Michel Barnier from the EU and David Davis from the UK having their serious talks together. But, as yet, no real outcome has emerged.

Well! There’s no doubt where I’m going to begin this column this week, and it is about last Sunday in Croke Park. Now I know this column extends to both Roscommon and Mayo so I hope the Mayo readers will excuse me when I go on a little bit about Roscommon.

Well, the lazy, lovely days of July are upon us and we have had a sweet spell of it recently. Sunshine, no rain, great warmth - it was heavenly. I hope you got a chance to be out and about and to so enjoy it.

Seán Kyne has been given a junior ministerial portfolio that takes him across two government departments, while Ciaran Cannon has been rescued from the backbenches, having also been appointed a Minister of State, under new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Well, so many awful things have happened since we last spoke together, and yet so many hopeful, optimistic things have also happened. So, let us put them all in context.

The process of putting a master plan in place for the strategic development zone (SDZ) at Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK) will take in the region of two years to complete, the elected members of Mayo County Council were told this week at their June monthly meeting which was held in Carancon Parish Centre. At the meeting the members voted to defer the making of a new local area plan for the airport following the announcement a fortnight ago of the SDZ designation being approved by the Cabinet.

When a teacher stands in front of their class, they know that they are like an arms dealer, passing on the most powerful weapon in the world — the weapons of knowledge and education. Education is what remains in your mind long after you have left behind your schooldays. Its role is to replace an empty mind with an open one. It is that process that continues throughout life in the race to become a better person. And when you see a class of young students enforcing change, it is most refreshing in this age of cynicism.
